CineGrid Featured in Keynote at SURFnet Relatiedagen
SURFnet invited CineGrid Co-founder Laurin Herr to deliver the keynote at the 20th anniversary SURFnet Relatiedagen held May 14-15, 2008 in Noordwijkerhout, Holland. Herr’s talk, titled “Building a New User Community for Very High Quality Media Applications on Very High Speed Networks,” featured various CineGrid Exchange content, streamed in 4K over networks and JPEG 2000 decoded in real-time for projection on a large screen with 5.1 surround sound in the auditorium.

Image Essence will collaborate on advanced codec research with Calit2.
Image Essence will work with UC San Diego researchers in the Calit2 Microelectronic Embedded Systems Laboratory to explore acceleration of the Image Essence codec on graphics and other processors, as well as to develop advanced codec features enabled by the codec's internal structure.

The Corporation for Education Network Initiatives (CENIC), which operates CalREN, the California Research and Education Network, honored CineGrid, the one year old international research consortium for networked media arts, with a CENIC 2008 Innovations in Networking Award at its annual conference in Oakland, California.

CineGrid Demonstrates International Networked Collaboration for 4K Motion Picture “Dailies”
In a historic proof-of-concept demonstration that could revolutionize the way movies are made, CineGrid, the international media networking research organization, successfully demonstrated the feasibility of global-scale networked collaboration for even the most compute-intensive, time-sensitive and interactive aspects of 4K digital cinema production and post-production. The demonstration was presented at Barrandov Studios, one of the oldest and largest media production centers in Europe, at GLIF 2007, the Seventh Annual Global LambdaGrid Workshop, on September 17 – 18 in Prague, Czech Republic.

CineGrid Demonstrates International Networked Distribution of 4K Motion Pictures
In a historic proof-of-concept demonstration that could revolutionize the way movies and other media are distributed globally, CineGrid, the international media networking research organization, successfully demonstrated how high speed networks can be used to deliver cinema quality 4K digital motion pictures at four times the resolution of HDTV, streaming “on demand” in real time from seven different playback servers situated in Japan, Europe and North America to an audience in Prague watching on a large screen with surround sound.

SIGGRAPH @ UC San Diego Offers Glimpse of Future in Super High Definition Video
Technologies to serve and display video in 4K -- at more than four times the resolution of high-definition TV -- as well as a short movie by Academy Award-winning director Peter Jackson shot entirely with a 4K video camera, are among the highlights on display at the University of California, San Diego in early August. The demos will complement digital performances and installations at UCSD that are part of SIGGRAPH, the premier computer graphics and interactive technologies conference, which will attract an estimated 25,000 people to San Diego from August 4 through 9.

CineGrid Demonstrates Real Time 4K Trans-Atlantic
Streaming of Live Performance from Amsterdam to San Diego

The first successful demonstration of trans-Atlantic streaming over photonic IP networks of 4K digital motion pictures and 5.1 surround sound was achieved by the international research consortium, CineGrid. This demonstration, part of the CineGrid @ Holland Festival 2007 project, was the latest in a series of ground-breaking CineGrid experiments using very high quality digital media running over very high speed digital networks.

Lucasfilm Hosts Audio Engineering Society for Calit2 CineGrid Special Event
For the first time anywhere, 2K and 4K resolution digital motion pictures and 24-channel digital audio were streamed from three different locations in real time using Calit2's CineGrid infrastructure.

World’s First International Real-time Streaming of 4K Digital Cinema over Gigabit IP Optical Fiber Networks
In a demonstration that could foretell the future of videoconferencing, scientific visualization and digital cinema deployment, scientists from around the world meeting for iGrid 2005 at Calit2 in San Diego were treated to the world’s first real-time, international transmission of super high-definition (SHD) 4K digital video.
